About Helen
Helen Sutton is a contemporary artist based on the Kent coast, working primarily in oils and acrylics. Her paintings draw on the shifting light, colour, and atmosphere of the landscapes around her, the energy of everyday scenes, and the emotional presence of animals.
After a long and fulfilling career in NHS leadership, Helen has returned to painting with renewed purpose, bringing the same depth of observation, emotional intelligence, and commitment to craft that shaped her professional life.
She now works from her home studio, where her animals and the surrounding coastal villages, sea views, and ever-changing weather offer a constant source of inspiration.
Her work is characterised by expressive colour, layered textures, and an intuitive approach to composition. Whether sketching outdoors or developing larger pieces in the studio, Helen is drawn to capturing the colour and atmosphere, the movement, the quietness — rather than a literal representation of place.
Artist Statement
‘I create contemporary coastal paintings inspired by the landscapes of the Kent shoreline. My work focuses on simplicity, balance and atmosphere distilling the coastline into beautiful colours. Each painting develops its own depth and subtle movement.
My works sits effortlessly within a space, bringing a sense of calm and connection without overwhelming it.
Inspired by painting my own dogs, I take commissions for pet portraits through the bespoke section of the website. I will work with you so that the portrait captures the personality of your beloved pet. ’
