About Helen
Helen Sutton is a contemporary artist based in the South West of England, working primarily in oils and acrylics. Her paintings are inspired by the ever-changing light and colour of the British landscape — from the rugged moorlands of Dartmoor to the gentle harbours of the Cornish coast.
After studying Fine Art at university, Helen spent several years working in education before returning to painting full-time. She works from her garden studio, where the surrounding countryside provides a constant source of inspiration.
Her work is characterised by a bold use of colour and an intuitive approach to composition. Whether painting en plein air or working from sketches and photographs in the studio, Helen aims to capture the mood and atmosphere of a place rather than a photographic likeness.
Artist Statement
“I paint because I want to hold onto those fleeting moments — the way light falls across water at dawn, the last glow of colour before the sun sets behind the hills. My work is about feeling as much as seeing. I want the viewer to step into the painting and feel the wind, smell the grass, hear the sea.”
